Sanathoi (Bishesh Huirem), a transgender is barred from going to school, is even seen as a curse and an object of ridicule by her/their family and the society around her/them. She/They encounters another major transphobic incident. Her/Their friend Ayeengbi (Ethoi Oinam) encourages Sanathoi to fight for her/their rights and strongly face anything that comes in the way. Synopsis
It's Not My Choice (2015) is a multiple award winning Manipuri Short Film written and directed by Priyakanta Laishram about LGBTQ+ issues and rights. Priyakanta Laishram said - "The title itself i.e ‘’It’s Not My Choice” says that it is not by choice that homosexual people are homosexuals. The general public thinks that homosexuality is a genetic defect or it is because of wrong upbringing and socialisation. They have that wrong concept in their mind that someone’s sexual preference or sexuality can easily be changed through proper medication or yoga. It’s Not My Choice says that it is not by choice that homosexual/transgender people are homosexuals/transgenders. The general public thinks that homosexuality is a genetic defect or it is because of wrong upbringing and socialisation. They have that wrong concept in their mind that someone’s sexual preference or sexuality can easily be changed through proper medication or yoga. I am saying that being gay or trans is a part of normal range of human sexuality. It’s not a mutation, but rather very much like the genetic regions that determine the colour of your hair." Bishesh Huirem, a celebrated transgender actress from Manipur and also the first Trans woman to represent India at Miss International Queen Pageant essayed the leading role in the film. Ethoi Oinam, Chakpram Rameshchandra (Edhou), Sophia Sapam are playing the major supporting characters in the film. The film was nominated in many categories and won several awards including Best Filmmaker For A Cause and Jury's Special Mention Award at various national and international level short film festivals.
