Laimayum Thambalngoubi Devi was a distinguished figure in the world of Manipuri dance and cinema. Born on July 17, 1930, in Imphal, Manipur, she was initiated into dance during her childhood by her father, Shri L. Narahari Sharma. Her training in Natasankirtana and Manipuri Ras Leela was under the tutelage of several eminent gurus, including Maisnam Amubi Singh, Haobam Atomba Singh, R.K. Akesana Singh, R.K. Sujabora, and R.K. Priyagopalsana.
Thambalngoubi Devi began her teaching career at the Manipur Dance College, which was later renamed the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy. She served as a senior guru and trained numerous dancers at the Academy. Her performances took her across India and abroad as a member of the Academy’s dance troupe.
In addition to her contributions to dance, Thambalngoubi Devi also gained acclaim as an actress in Manipuri theatre and is recognized as one of the first actresses in Manipuri cinema. Her artistic excellence was acknowledged with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award and the title of Nritya Bhushan, conferred by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad. In 1995, she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to the dance traditions of Manipur.
Her legacy continues to inspire dancers and artists within the region and beyond, as she played a pivotal role in promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Manipur through her art.
