Gitchandra Tongbra, affectionately known as G.C. Tongbra, was a luminary in the world of Manipuri literature. Born on February 6, 1913, in Imphal, Manipur, he was a multifaceted personality – a satirist, poet, playwright, and academic whose work left an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of the region.

Tongbra’s literary journey was characterized by his sharp wit and keen observation of society. His satirical works often held a mirror to the societal norms and issues of his time, making him a voice of the people. His plays, such as “Mani Manou,” “Matric Pass,” and “Upu Baksi,” are celebrated for their socio-realistic portrayal of life in Manipur.

His academic prowess was equally notable. As an educator, he influenced generations, instilling in them a love for literature and the arts. His contributions to Manipuri drama were recognized with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 1975, and he was also honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his play “Ngabongkhao” in 1978.

The Tongbra Drama Festival, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, under the aegis of Ougri Theatre Repertory Manipur, is a testament to his enduring influence. His works, rich in humor and social commentary, remain a significant part of India’s cultural heritage, cherished by readers and audiences alike.

Gitchandra Tongbra passed away on June 3, 1996, but his legacy lives on through his enduring works and the many lives he touched with his words and wisdom.
